Description	人間の心の進化的起源を明らかにするために、チンパンジーを対象にした野外研究と実験研究をおこなった。実験研究では、彼らの数や言語の能力の萌芽を実証し、超短期記憶の存在を明らかにした。主な研究対象となったチンパンジーにちなんで「アイ・プロジェクト」と呼ばれる研究である。コンピューター制御の実験システムを駆使して知覚・認知・記憶・概念などを、まったく同じ装置で同じ手続きによって人間とチンパンジーを比較する手法を確立した。1978年4月に開始したアイ・プロジェクトは、1群3世代のチンパンジーの群れ全体を対象とした、知識と技術の世代間伝播の研究に発展している。一方で、野外研究としては、野生チンパンジーに石器使用の文化のあることを発見し、それが世代を超えて伝播し、「教えない教育・見習う学習」と呼ぶ学習メカニズムがあることを見出した。西アフリカ・ギニアの世界自然遺産であるボッソウ・ニンバの森の研究である。ボッソウの1群を対象にした通年の研究体制を確立し、1986年から継続する長期観察研究によって、野生チンパンジーの道具使用の文化や、その基盤となる親子やなかま関係を明らかにした。こうした研究を通じて、人間の心の進化的起源を実証的に探究する「比較認知科学」と呼ばれる新しい学問分野を創出した。人間と動物という二分法を超えて、人間とそれ以外の動物をひとつのつながりとして捉える新しい人間観を実証的に提示した。
